Hanie, 5, from Ghazni, Afghanistan

I am here with my mother but I have no brothers and sisters.  I am only 5 years old, so I never went to school. But I can ride the bicycle and I like to eat sweets. I already have made four friends here in the camp.

Abbas, 19, from Herat, Afghanistan

My parents were killed in the war in Afghanistan and I have no brothers and sisters, so I fled alone. Herat, my hometown, is a beautiful city with a nice park and the famous Minars. But now there are Taliban everywhere. War, war, war … When Afghanistan is safe, I hope I can go back again.

In Afghanistan I worked at the American Academy. I hope I can get some education here and work as construction worker.

Hinene, 12, from Damascus, Syria

Before the war it was beautiful in Syria, very beautiful! We had everything, could play and learn. But now kids can not go to school, all the bombs! It is very dangerous I want to start all over here!

Most of my friends are still in Syria, but a few also fled. I am glad I can send emails to them so they know I am here and safe.

I am so sorry to hear that there is no food, sometimes not even water in Syria. And everything is very expensive now!

Fleeing from Syria was very dangerous and difficult to do. I’m here with my family. I have three sisters and one brother. We’re here since one and a half month.

I couldn’t see many other places, so I could only make friends here. My parents tried to find a school for me here, but couldn’t find a place yet. In Syria I went to 6th grade. My favourite subject in school was mathematics and Arabic language

Later I want to become a doctor. Most kids in Syria want to become a doctor!

Shafiq, 22, from Kabul, Afghanistan

Life in Afghanistan is very hard right now because of the Taliban killing so many people. There is no safety at all. There is war since 14 years and I almost don’t remember the time of peace.

I came to Germany with my wife and my mother by train, bus and boat. We walked from Iran to Turkey. From there a boat took us to Greece. It took us 4 months to come here. We couldn’t take anything with us.

Life in the camp is hard because it is very noisy with so many people living here with almost no privacy. Life here is very different to my home country Afghanistan, but me an my family still like Germany very much.

Just like all men here I can not work yet but I learn German so I hope I can become a mechanic here.
